We are proud to announce our 2010 Leadership Award honorees:  Minnesota Nurses Association and Rena Moran

The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) represents 20,000 professional nurses across the state.  A leader in health care, MNA was crucial in two significant fights to achieve access to affordable health care.  MNA fought for comprehensive federal health care reform by addressing the delivery of health care services, accessibility to quality health care, and single-payer system.  Additionally, MNA worked in coalition with nonprofit organizations and advocates to save General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) for Minnesota's poorest residents.  Finally, MNA organized the largest nurses strike in United States history.  Putting patients first, MNA fought to improve nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.

Rena Moran is a born leader.  After arriving in Minnesota over ten years ago, Rena has gone from homeless to running for the state House of Representatives.  She is a community organizer at heart, and has roots as a TakeAction Minnesota leader, an Organizing Apprenticeship Project Fellow and a Wellstone Organizing Fellow.  Rena has fought to bring awareness to issues that impact her community: the impact of the Central Light Rail Corridor on residents; voter registration in the African American community; affordable housing; and the re-enfranchisement of people who have been formerly incarcerated.  Notably, Rena Moran is poised to be the second African American woman in the state house.  Her success as a community organizer and on the campaign trail is directly linked with her ability to build a team of community members that spans racial identities.
